Description:
The time around New Years is a perfect time for some alpine walking.

The plan is to ascend from the Geehi River via Hannels Spur (which I have heard is long, steep, unmarked, covered with blackberry etc), set up camp in Wilson Creek area just below the summit of Mt Kosciuszko, spend a day or two pfaffing around up above the snow line including seeing in the new year from the very highest point in Australia , then descend in time to be back home by the evening of 2nd Jan 2017.

Hannels Spur is an 1800m ascent, so over twice as big a climb as Blue Gum to Perrys Lookdown, Mt Solitary via the Col, or Mt Cloudmaker from the Cox's

I want to to be at Thredbo by mid-afternoon on the 30th, which means leaving early in the morning of the 30th (or possibly even late 29th)

We will camp somewhere mostly out of the wind and where the snow on the ground has already melted, but weather can turn quickly and it can still get down below zero overnight. So you will need a waterproof jacket, good sleeping bag, thermals, ground mat etc.

If there's another car besides mine we can do a car shuffle between Thredbo and Geehi river, which gives the option of spending longer on top and descending via the chairlift.

I will be driving to and from Katoomba, not planning on going in to the city but can give a lift to anyone willing to get a train to Katoomba.

You will need reasonable fitness and some experience in overnight hiking. Small party size only.
Trip liable to be cancelled or amended in event of bad weather.
