Description:
Helensburgh - Metropolitan Tunnel - Burning Palms Beach - Otford (Royal National Park).
Sunday 9th April 2017.
NOTE: This replaces walk originally planned for 19th March - see below.

A reasonably easy walk of 12-13 km. A good introductory walk for new members. Moderate grades on which a fit beginner should have no problems.
Helensburgh is just under an hour by train from Sydney.
Great views of Illawarra Escarpment and the Sea.
Metropolitan Tunnel at Helensburgh is the nearest tunnel to Sydney in which you can find Glow worms.
Leeches: low chance if you are careful; high chance if you keep stopping to check for them!
Travel by train - meet up at Central Station. Details of where and when given once you sign up. It won't be too early!
Train fare with Opal Card is $2-50 return.
Back to Sydney by 6.30pm.
What you need: You need to bring: lunch, good shoes (Volleys are OK), sunscreen, 1.5
Litres water, and a headlamp or small torch, the sort that cost $5 or less at KMart or a camping store. Swim clothes if you want to swim.

Also, you will not mind getting your shoes wet and muddy in Metropolitan Tunnel!

Also, you will undertake NOT to make ANY loud noises in Metropolitan Tunnel but to be very quiet!

We will be able to take a look at Figure 8 Pool as the tide will be low at lunchtime that day. Even so, it will depend on the seas not being rough. If it is not safe, we will not look at Figure 8 Pool. A condition on joining this trip is that you MUST follow the trip leader's (i.e. My) advice about this. All trip leaders write trip reports at the end of walks, and if you disobey instructions you will be named!

(The tide for Figure 8 Pool is not suitable on March 19th - that is one reason the walk date is changed.)

Please see this article: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/tourists-flock-to-dangerous-rock-pool-despite-warnings-20170112-gtq6yk.htm

Please note that smoking is not allowed on trains, nor in National Parks. I also prefer that smokers not smoke throughout the whole walk.

You MUST be a member of either SUBW or Subwoir to join this trip, which you
can do through the SUBW website. Only sign up if you are sure you can come. We take a dim view of "no-shows".

Also, if you miss out on a place on this walk, please do not just turn up at the station hoping a place will come up.
