The trips listed here are joint trips of Sydney University Bushwalkers, and Suboir United Bushwalkers, unless otherwise specified. Not all trips are listed here: many are decided on impromptu on our mailing lists. The mailing lists are also the best way to find out the latest information on walks and other events. Some recurring events are listed at the bottom of this page. New trip leaders are very welcome. If you would like to lead a trip, contact the walks secretary. |
Many walks fill up quickly! Please let the trip leader know as soon as possible that you are interested, and tell them a little about yourself - your walking experience and fitness level, what gear you will need to borrow, where you live and whether you have access to a car. Leaders have the right to refuse to take walkers if they lack the necessary fitness or experience. Important Notice: Please read our rescue information. |

| 156 | Easter, 14-17 April 2006 | Woila Creek and Mother Woila, Deua National Park. Depart Sydney: Thursday evening 13 April Return Sydney: Monday evening 17 April Deua National park is an extensive wilderness area on the Eastern side of the Great Dividing Range between Cooma and Braidwood (south east of Canberra). In the heart of this wilderness lies Mother Woila, a rugged quartzite peak and the dominant peak of the area. On this walk we will attempt an ascent of this peak direct from Woila Creek. We also hope to visit the nearby peak of Tabletop en route. The walk is in steep and mountainous terrain. Part of the trip involves exposed rock scrambling and we will need to use hand lines at the very least. There are some long hills too. The trip is off track, and will be semi-exploratory. You will need to be competent at walking with a 4 day pack and at negotiating steep and exposed terrain. Previous overnight bushwalking experience is therefore essential. Places on the trip are limited. | Ashley Burke Phone: |

Just the thing to shed those unsightly Easter holiday kilograms! | 167 | 27-28 May 2006 | HONORABLE TREASURER'S GRADUATION SUSS-OUT TRIP (HTGSOT) All good things must come to an end, and so did my Engineering degree. The grad ceremony is on Friday, so I will do the hard yards and make libatory sacrifices to Huey all day so that we can head up the Putty road early on Saturday (although Friday will no doubt take care of how early), then check out the Colo River around Canoe Creek, the nearby passes, the upstream, the downstream, the hills, the vales, the caves, the wombat holes, the flowers, the scrub, the wind and the sky, and maybe Mt Savage. Then, high jinks and sleep, more exploration, and get back to the cars. Whew! I'm real sorry this isn't a bludge trip but I'm still in the mood for walking, although Friday might take care of that too. I can't guarantee anything about this trip except a great deal of big hill climbing and I'm going to have a ball, so if that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea then maybe I'll just see you on the Friday instead. (I'll be the guy with the mortarboard and volleys hassling the barstaff at the Australian) Email me if you're interested, limited numbers, no weirdoes, weirdoes only etc etc | Tom Murtagh |

We will need to keep moving due to the short daylight hours at this time of year. There are some very steep sections. The scenery is varied and beautiful at this time of the year. Due to the likelihood of small camp sites, places on this trip are limited. | Ashley Burke |

| 180 | Saturday 1st July | SORRY WALK FULL I will be running an overnight beginners bushwalk on the first weekend of July along the Coast Track in the Royal National Park. It would be a great first overnight trip if, you’ve done a few day walks before and you want to try walking with a pack. Walking is quite straight forward with good walking trails most of the way. It’s 26ks over the 2 days, so it should be quite a nice walk. We will have to carry our own drinking water and stoves. The scenery is amazing with views of the ocean and cliffs all the way. We walk through scrub, rainforest and along beaches with a few swimming opportunities too. Transport is easy with public transport (trains and ferrys) running to both ends of the walk. We do have to book camp sites though, meaning we’ll have to get organised soon. Approximate cost for the weekend-$3 Camping, $5 Ferry, $6 Train fairs (calculated from central) Please email me ASAP | Kate 0427 528 301 |

| 182 | 2-8 July | Katoomba to Picton. A variation (I hope an interesting one) on the classic Katoomba - Mittagong walk, now that Robert Sloss's tintags have fallen off that route. Details are sketchy and the dates could slide a little, but the basic idea is to head up Mt Cookem, then down to Yerranderie via the Blue Breaks, and exit via the very beautiful and surprisingly rarely visited Nattai wilderness. Previous experience with extended walks is essential, and the Blue Breaks are very rough-going - particularly if we get to the good bits - so no slouches, moochers or wowsers please. Drop me a mail if you're interested. | Tom Murtagh |

| 185 | Thursday 13th July to Sunday 16th July | Mountaineering skills for Bushwalkers Basic technical skills training for bushwalkers that will allow crossing glaciers, high alpine passes or climbing easy 'walk-up' peaks in the company of experienced partners. We'll be based on the main range within striking distance of Blue Lake (weather permitting). Skills covered will include: self arrest, snow and ice anchors, glacier travel and self rescue as well as basic snow and ice climbing. The numbers we can take are very limited so unfortunately it's going to be a bit selective. Preference will be given to those who have off-track walking experience, rope skills and have helped out teaching/leading club trips previously. If you have previous alpine climbing experience you are welcome to come along and help and refresh your own skills if you can supply all your own gear. | 187 | Sat 22- Sun 23 July 2006 | Here is a date for your diaries - the weekend of 22-23 July. Book this in for my 40th birthday party / bushwalk to Hatchers Hollow on the Kowmung River. For those who don't know it, Hatchers Hollow is a great camp site not far away from the Kowmung River in the Southern Blue Mountains. It is set among rugged river scenery and tall trees. Access is either as a full day's walking from Kanangra Walls or as a much shorter walk (only 2 or 3 hours) from the Murruin Range near Mount Werong. It is likely that many of us will choose the shorter route in to allow time for volley ball and afternoon relaxation in this pleasant setting. During the evening we will enjoy some fine wines around the campfire. I hope you can make it, email if interested. | Ashley Burke |

Sunday will be a little shorter. Most of the walking is not on a track, and in some places care is required on steep and rocky ground. In general, provided you are familiar with overnight walking and reasonably fit, the trip is highly recommended. | Ashley Burke |

AND wear one accessory from your adventures in the wilderness – it could be a lucky hat, helmet or perhaps your favourite handline! So we know who is and isn’t on the Crawl... At the end all people’s names that made it to the end are collected in a hat which will be drawn for the midnight prize. You can download the itinerary here. | Rachel Melrose |

| 217 | Sat 28 Oct 2006 - Callendina Loop | I'm hoping to head out to Callendina loop this Saturday. Leaving from Linden in the middle of the Blue Mountains, this would be a 12-15km mountain bike ride along the Linden Ridge fire trail, followed by a 2-4km bush bash to Callendina Loop on Wentworth Creek. This trip would be of medium grade for those who preferably have some experience mountain biking and some experience walking off-track. Let me know if you are interested. Or I'm open to other suggestions to get me out of the city. | Chris Berwick 0422 995299 |

| 221 | Sat 11 - Sun 12 Nov 2006 | Start off the canyoning season with a 2 day trip, camping by the cars overnight. I am thinking of doing two day trips, on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November. On Saturday night we will camp near our cars. The area is likely to be the Newnes Plateau, and we will choose canyons or walks on each day depending on the weather, number of people etc. It may be possible for people to join us for either of the days if you can't make it for the whole weekend. Ideally some previous abseiling or canyoning experience is desirable. We may do an easy canyon on one day and a harder one on the following day. We'll see. | 227 | 25-26 Nov 2006 | On this trip we will explore upper Arabanoo Creek in the Kanangra Boyd National Park. The aim will be to start high in the headwaters at the Dance Floor Cave and walk downstream from there. The trip may involve some abseiling, as there may be some waterfalls in this section of the creek. It will certainly involve a lot of clambering over rocks and walking along a rough creek bed. Hopefully we will find some nice clear pools for a dip if it is hot. On Sunday we will climb out of the creek and return to Kanangra via a ridge that is likely to involve a steep climb. Departure from Sydney is on Friday evening, returning on Sunday evening. The trip is suitable for people with previous creek walking and abseiling experience. | Ashley Burke |

| 250 | 22-23 January 2007 | Katoomba - Kanangra - Katoomba return Going for a bit of a training walk, work off those Christmas Canyon Kilos. It'll be a Katoomba station return job, extra-light packs, staying overnight at Kanangra. Probably going to avoid the usual highway (Yellow Pup, Strongleg et al.) so there could be some scope for an interesting route. It's about a hundred kilometres of tough mountainous off-track walking so you'll want to have excellent fitness and mental drive, the ability to walk out on your own, no qualms about night-walking or torturous road-bashes at the end of your tether. That said though it's some of the finest country in the world so if you're up to it drop me a line. Oh, and it also goes without saying that the walk will be delayed or cancelled if the weather isn't up to scratch. I'm not interested in becoming a heatwave statistic! | Tom Murtagh |
| 251 | Ettrema Gorge overnight walk - 26-28 January | I'm planning on heading down to the Ettrema gorge on the Australia Day long-weekend (26-28 Jan). Suitable for those with preferably some off-track and overnight walking experience. I'm still yet to plan a more detailed route. Likely leaving Thursday night. Please contact me if you are interested. | Chris Berwick 0422 995299 |

Ideally you will have had some previous experience of such trips. | Ashley Burke |

| 278 | 21-25 April | A five day ramble in the Blue Breaks! Hoping to cover a fair bit of territory so this one is definitely not for the faint-hearted or weak-kneed. Anzac Day (in)?conveniently falls on a Wednesday this year so if you can wrench the Monday and Tuesday from your loving employers then you're sweet. This will be almost entirely off-track with tricky scrambling and the potential for a couple of long road-bashes, so experienced walkers only. Call it difficult / long. Wednesday I might head out via Guouogang to Carlons - this is not the most direct route, presumably there are alternatives. | Tom Murtagh |

| 367 | 29-30 November | An introduction to canyoning for those new to this activity. Canyoning is the activity of walking, clambering, swimming and maybe abseiling within very narrow gorges in the Blue Mountains. On this weekend we will select canyons appropriate to the level of experience in the group. The canyons may involve abseiling and if necessary there will be opportunity for new members to practise this technique before going into the canyon. This trip will be held over two days. On the Saturday night we will enjoy camping near the cars. Provided you are generally fit and willing to get wet and try something new and clamber through a gorge where there are wet rocks and pools of water and a climb up a hill afterwards then this trip is open to all. If interested, please read the following web page and then contact me by email providing the requested information: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~aburke/WhatToBring/TripInformation.htm | Ashley Burke |

This trip is an opportunity for new or existing members of SUBW to do some canyons near Mt Wilson in the Blue Mountains. Float on lilos down long deep pools through a steep sandstone gorge. This trip is suitable for people with good general fitness. You don't need any canyoning experience... however, you will need to be able to walk approx 15 km per day, largely up steep hills. Some of the canyons may have abseiling and if you haven't abseiled before there will be the opportunity to learn this during the weekend. All the canyons will involve swimming and floating on lilos. You'll get wet and stay wet for extended periods during the day. There is a steep climb in and out. | Ashley Burke and Lois Loren 0405673070 |
| 378 | 14 March | Walk/paddle Hawkesbury region I'm going to be spending some time in the Hawkesbury region this Saturday 14/3/09. So, if you're interested in either walking or paddling... Walk option 1: Cowan to Brooklyn. I actually did this two weekends ago,
and the dam water level is quite high. Bring swimmers for this one - the
gist of this walk is in this video: Walk option 2: Wondabyne to Mt Pindar, return. Camp Pindar cave (so possible rain isn't an inconvenience). Not too strenuous. Unfortunately, I have to limit this to about 20km, so much as I'd like to, going from Cowan - Mt Pindar and spending the night in the cave isn't possible. Paddle option: Brooklyn to Bobbin Head, by watercraft. BYO canoe or kayak, paddle, drybags, and PFD. There'll be a car shuffle. | Andrew Meares 0458554874 |
| 379 | 21-22 March | Wolgan Valley - Camping / Canyoning / Walking Car camp at Newnes in the Wolgan Valley, Friday & Saturday nights. Saturday - Starlight canyon - (Suitable for experienced abseilers). Sunday - Walk the old coach road and glow worm tunnel with the option of a short canyon. (Suitable for people new to bush walking) For those who don't want to canyon or want a later start on the Saturday, there is plenty of easy walking or exploring in the area including the old oil shale ruins in the Wolgan Valley. | Peter Raines 0403 140 963 |
| 380 | Sunday March 22 | Wondabyne - Mt Wondabyne. Easy/medium daywalk in Brisbane Waters NP. Bring lunch, 2 litres water, good shoes, sunscreen. Catch 8.45am train from Central (8.58am Strathfield, 9.20am Hornsby), and you must ride in the rear car and tell the guard you are getting off at Wondabyne. Buy a return ticket to Wondabyne($10-00). Meet me at Wondabyne Station. Note: there is no road access to Wondabyne so you can't drive there! | Bruce Stafford |

| 388 | 22-23 April 2009 | I would like to do a two-day walk next week on Wednesday and Thursday. The likely destination is Pantoney's Crown, which is one of those climb a big hill, camp on top, enjoy the view then come down sorts of walks. I'm told there's a reasonable amount of route-finding and off-track walking involved. The aim is to leave on Wednesday morning and return Thursday night so this will probably involve fairly solid days of walking. If you are interested, please get in touch via email for more details. I am keeping plans fairly loose at this stage given that most people will be busy given the awkward timing! | Ben Kong |
| 389 | 25-26 April | Wild Dog Mountains Carlons Farm - Upper Breakfast Creek - Mobbs Soak - Splendour Rock - Mount Mouin - Carlons Farm We will explore the upper sections of Breakfast creek and for this we will take rope and abseiling gear just in case it is needed. We aim to complete this on the first day and then climb out of Breakfast Creek and go to Splendour Rock to camp on Saturday night. Great views are had from Splendour Rock. Sunday we will return to Carlons Farm via Mount Mouin, a shorter day - very scenic. The trip will not take place unless good weather is forecast for the weekend. The first part of the trip will involve walking off track and it will be wet and slippery walking along a steeply descending creek. So the trip would be suitable for people with previous overnight walking experience and good fitness, and competence at creek walking. Let me know if by email if interested and include a contact phone number. New members should include a brief description of your current level of experience and fitness, and whether you have all the gear you need for an overnight walk. | Ashley Burke |

Contact me for details if you need directions. | Tom Gleeson 0408 664 293 |
| 392 | Monday 18 May | A friend and I have made the last minute decision to knock over a canyon this Monday (18/5), with Newnes (Starlight) Canyon being our pick. We want to keep the party small, but are happy for a couple of other interested people to come along. It is a decent length day but nothing too strenuous, and well worth it for a very nice canyon with stunning glowworms. At the moment the plan is just to drive out in the morning and meet in Lithgow about 8am. I am heading from Penrith (so can pick up anyone who has to catch a train). Joshua is heading from Orange so can give lifts from that end. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |
| 393 | May 21-24 2009 | In celebration of having a little bit of time off work I am planning to spend a few days in the bush next weekend, heading out to Kanangra
Walls on Thurs night or early Fri morning and heading home on Sunday afternoon. Exact timing / route is still fluid and if you are interested in coming I am sure we could deliver some flexibility on both of these. We are looking to do a decent length trip, but nothing too strenuous (I would rather have time to enjoy the views and investigate a few areas). The plan at the moment is to head out to Cloudmaker then most likely down Ti Willa to the Kowmung via
Compagnoni Pass (although I am considering going out to Kooriekirra Top, down Gentle's Pass). Camp on the Kowmung on Fri night. A bit of river walking, a ridge climb if / when we get sick of the river, then along Gingra Range. I wouldn't mind poping back down via Roots Ridge and camping around Orange Bluff on Sat night. Then on Sunday up Brumby Ridge back to Gingra and on to the cars. As for transport, I am driving out from Penrith and have three free seats in the car, so can pick up passengers from train or car to save others fuel bills. Joshua is heading from Orange by road and also has free seats if anyone is coming from that direction. If you are interested in coming along just drop me an email or call me on 0404 273 313. As I said we are fairly flexible on time and route. Even on the trip we have the nasty habit of looking at a certain ridge / rocky outcrop / creek etc and changing the route to investigate. The journey is far more important than the destination. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |
| 394 | 23-24 May 2009 | Beginners Navigation Weekend. This trip is for any member of the club who is interested and keen to learn how to find their way through the bush with map and compass. No prior experience is necessary, however you will need to bring your own walking/camping gear, your own map and your own compass. We will be walking through the bush where there is no track and carrying all our gear so you need to be reasonably fit. For more information please see http://members.ozemail.com.au/~aburke/navigation.html | Ashley Burke |

| 410 | Saturday December 5th | If you are interested in doing something slightly out of the ordinary (less competitive and shorter than a rogaine)then this might be for you. More details are on the Max Adventure Web: maxadventure.com.au. There are two courses, a 12km and 6km course. The Mud Run is a cross country run with some natural and often muddy obstacles to challenge competitors. The course will traverse the beautiful native forests of the area and includes fire trails, grasslands, creek crossings, hills and much more. As the name suggest, numerous mudflats and bog-holes will be at the core of this event so don't bring that new set of runners, you might just lose them to the Mud Monster! Previous abseiling experience and confidence with rope skills and good stamina and fitness are essential. We will probably do Kanangra Main Canyon on 23 Jan, Davies Canyon on 24-25 Jan, and then return home after a well earned rest on 26 Jan. | Ashley Burke Phone: |

| 422 | March 20-21 | After an abandoned attempt to do Davies Canyon in January I have decided to set aside a weekend and get out there before the canyoning season comes to an end. For those who don't know, Davies is a two day canyon near Kanangra that gets much less traffic than most due to its remote location. It is a deep, spectacular gorge with abseils of up to 60m. The plan is to head out after work on Friday March 19, either camp near the cars or walk a few kilometres along fire trail, then head off early on Saturday, spending the day down the canyon. We will camp overnight at the end of the canyon before spending Sunday climbing close to 1000 metres up and walking back to the cars. This trip requires lots of walking, mostly off track, through difficult terrain. You need to be an experienced walker and have confidence abseiling long drops. It is not a beginners trip. If you want to discuss it with me to work out if this trip is suitable for you feel free to give me a call. There will be a maximum group size of 6, and I have already got three locked in, so don't sign up unless you can definitely make it. Last minute drop-outs may mysteriously disappear in the bush on future trips! ;-) I have ropes, but you will need to bring your own abseiling gear (harness, descender, gloves etc). Also required is overnight camping gear. We will need to take tents or a fly as there are no camp caves. To save on weight we will obviously try and share these. If you have any other questions about what gear you require feel free to flick me an email with your questions. | Tim Vollmer Phone: 0404 273 313 |
| 423 | Saturday 20th | Beginner Day Trip Royal National Park Since all campgrounds are booked out for the coming week end and I have other stuff coming up, I will only do a daytrip to the Royal. Taking the train to Otford Station and back. Bring enough water, snack, sucream and hat and swimmers if you like. I'm planning to take the train to Otford and back. Just an easy leisurely walk and lunch at the beach. | Ricarda Roemer 0407 040 126 |

| 425 | Sunday 28 March | Gaping Gill Canyon Basically, it's just a nice creek with a couple big abseils (20m and 30m) near Claustral. We will walk up stream through a nice section of Carmarthen Brook to Rainbow Ravine. There is a nice area here to do lunch, have a swim etc, and we can explore a little further up stream. It's not a hard trip, but it does involve a lot of rock scrambling, wading, possible swims. I have ropes, but you will need your own harness, descender, gloves etc. We will be meeting at the Claustral car park at 9am, so if you need a lift I can pick you up at Penrith Station. There is an express that arrives just after 8am. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |
| 426 | Monday 29 March | Empress Canyon A short and pretty canyon which is easy to access and has only one abseil (a 30m beauty into a pool with an audience of tourists). It is a good beginner trip, and if you are a little nervous or need a abseiling refresher we can throw a rope over a cliff on the way up for a practice. I will supply rope, but you need your own harness, descender, etc. It will be a relaxed start to the day, and I can give a lift from Penrith Station. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |

On the Monday head out of the river on to Bowen ridge & back to Little Tootie, picking up the fire trail on the way. Start and Finish Bilpin, 1.5 hours west of Sydney via Bells Line of Road. Suit experienced walkers.

| 429 | Easter Long Weekend 2-5 April | Easter walk, Currockbilly Mountain 2-5 April A very small number of places remain available on this 4 day trip over the Easter long weekend. Currockbilly Mountain lies in the Budawang Range on the NSW south coast, about 3-4 hours drive from Sydney. We aim to climb this peak via Wirritin Ridge. This area is the western side of an extensive wilderness area in the Morton and Budawang National Parks. Leaving Sydney on Thursday evening 1 April, returning to Sydney on Monday 5 April. The route is entirely off track through remote and rugged country that is densely vegetated. It is likely we will have to walk through dense scrub in places. We will need to carry lots of water and we'll be camping wherever we end up. The route and itinerary will be need to be flexible, depending as itdoes on terrain, weather etc. The trip suits experienced and fit walkers only, and there are only 2-3 places remaining. If interested, please email me no later than 30 March. | Ashley Burke |
| 430 | Sunday 4 - Monday 5 April | For those of you who like me can't escape for four days over easter, this could be the canyoning trip for you. The basic plan is to drive out Saturday afternoon or evening, then spend the next two days doing a handful of canyons from a base camp on the ridge. I am determined to do Bjelke's Mind, Steep Creek (Bridge), Froth and Bubble (Bubble Bath) and possibly a couple others along the south branch of the 'Boori depending on time. You will need to lug everything out to a base camp, but we will only be taking small day packs through the actual canyons. This is not a beginner trip and will require plenty of off track walking, navigational skills, pass finding, rock scrambling, abseiling and all the usual difficulties of canyoning. I have ropes, but you will need your own harness / descender etc. If you are not sure whether this trip would suit you, feel free to call or email, let me know your fitness and experience, and we'll work out whether it will be okay. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |

| 436 | e.g. Sunday May 2, 2010 | Golden Stairs (Narrow Neck Katoomba) to Ruined Castle (and Mt Solitary if time permits). Medium walk of 12km return - steep descent on steps at start and finish, and steepish grade at Mt Solitary, otherwise reasonably level. OK for beginners. Meet at north side of Strathfield Railway Station outside the shops there at 8am for departure by 8.30am. Please be on time as it is a 1.5 hours drive to Katoomba and maybe 7 hours on the track, so we can't afford a delayed start. Need good walking shoes, and at least 2 litres of water, and lunch.

| 437 | Monday 3 May 2010 | I have managed to wrangle Monday off work, so I'm heading down Claustral to show a visiting American one of our most spectacular and sustained canyons. It will probably be cold, so for once I'm saying wetsuits are advisable, and involves three abseils of up to 15m down the deep and dark Black Hole of Calcutta (photos of which first got me interested in canyoning!) As usual, I will supply rope, but you need your own harness, descender, etc. You need to be a confident abseiler. It is a fairly long day, involves lots of scrambling on wet, slippery rock, has several swims, and will make you sweat on the exit, but is well worth it for the incredible scenery. We are going to set off from the Claustral car park by 8am, so you can meet us there. Alternatively I can pick people up from Penrith Station at 7am. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |

| 439 | 15-16 May 2010 | Beginners' Navigation Weekend. Beginners and new members are welcome. The aim of the weekend is to provide the opportunity for people to learn and practise navigation with map and compass. The trip will be run over 2 days in the upper Wollangambe and we will camp out overnight on the Saturday night. No prior experience is necessary, however you will need to bring your own walking/camping gear, your own map and your own compass. You'll need to carry your own pack with food and camping gear for the weekend. For more information see http://members.ozemail.com.au/~aburke/navigation.html | Ashley Burke Phone: |
| 440 | Sunday 16 May | I'm planning to do a day walk out of Green Gully (Megalong Valley) onto Narrow Neck via a couple historically significant but lesser used passes. Currently my thoughts are that I'll head up Carlon Head, follow the old bushwalkers route (from back before the fire trail was built in the early 60's) via Glenraphael, then down Dunphy's Pass and back to the cars. It is not a particularly long or hard day, and should give time to explore (I wouldn't mind checking out the start of the pass to Harmil Ledge, look for the old camp site at Glenraphael Swamp and check out the falls). While it isn't a hard day, the 400m ascent and descent are pretty steep. It involves a lot of scrambling, often on wet, loose or slippery rock. There are several sections that are climbed using chains and spikes. One in particular is pretty confronting as it is up a flat wall on the nose of the point and can be very windy (http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk/732/196_9634.jpg). I will be driving up and will have space for three people in my car. I can pick people up from Penrith Station. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |

| 442 | Sunday 23rd May 2010 | Day walk - Wondabyne to Mt Wondabyne. Easy/medium - some short grades. Bring water, lunch, walking shoes or volleys OK. Get 8.45am train from Sydney Central (or Strathfield at 8.58am, Hornsby 9.22am) and I will meet you at Wondabyne Station at 9.52am. IMPORTANT: ride in the last car AND tell the train guard you are getting off at Wondabyne. There is no car access to Wondabyne. Returning to Sydney by 6pm. | Bruce Stafford |

| 444 | Saturday 5th to Sunday 6th June | I am organising an easy bushwalk to a section of the lower Kowmung for the weekend of the 5th and 6th of June. The rough concept is to either head out on the Friday night to Kanangra Walls and camp in Dance Floor Cave (a very comfortable camp cave with reliable water less than a kilometre from the car park, all on track - see http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5247888&l=221f070ed6&id=626329253) or very early Saturday morning (ie heading off from the carpark by 8am). On Saturday we will probably walk down to Orange Bluff. Depending on time we will either camp there, or have a stroll along the Kowmung River to an alternate camp site. On the Sunday we will return to the cars via a nearby ridge. The walk should be fairly easy, predominantly on track, and is suitable for beginners, although like all walks in the area it will in places involve steep sections, walking on wet rock, moving through scrub etc. There will be plenty of water at our camp site, which allows for slightly lighter packs, and I would recommend avoiding bringing too much gear as the extra weight is likely to slow you down and make the trip more unpleasant for all. Travel wise, Joshua will be coming from Orange, T1 from the North Shore, and myself from the Penrith area, so lifts will be available. If you want to discuss gear or fitness requirements, please feel free to give me a call. Places are limited. | Tim Vollmer 0404 273 313 |
| 445 | 28th-29th June 2010 | Student Walk! Got holidays? yes we do! So pencil in a walk for the first few days of the mid semester break - Mon 28th to Tue 29th or if we're really keen until Wed 30th (at which point I need to be back in Sydney) So I dont have a specific location in mind but we can discuss that as a group once we figure out peoples time constraints and the vehicle supply. Please fill in (another) spreadsheet and get in touch if you have any specific ideas etc... https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dE9DNjdxVko4c2ZSU3JaTW1leHY2M0E6MQ | Bjorn Phone: 0434967512 |
| 446 | Thursday 15th July 7am | I'm going on a day walk onto Narrowneck this Thursday to explore a few of the passes.
The weather is looking promising (the word sunny has even been mentioned) but we will need to leave early to get the most of the daylight hours. The plan is to leave Usyd by 7am, meeting in front of Fisher Library from 6:45am. If interested please email me the standard info by Wednesday or give me a call on 0434967512; name, email, mobile, if you have a car how many spare seats you'll have. Whilst this shouldn't be a hard day we do have a fair bit of ground to cover and the passes themselves require a certain comfort with exposure (I will take some rope for added safety). You must be prepared for this if you/we are to enjoy the trip. Here is a description/pictures of the passes I intend to take (Tarros Ladder and Carlon Head) http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk.php?nid=732 . In view of this please dont wear hiking boots but something flexible with good grip, even on wet rock. Also make sure you have some wet and cold weather gear... Note that we are guaranteed only one car which is already half full, hopefully some more people will bring vehicles but if they dont then the last to register will be catching the train to Blackheath ready for a car shuffle... | Bjorn 0434967512 |
| 447 | July 2010 | The Barrington NP Walk originally put down for June 5 is postponed. It will now be a weekend walk probably on 17/18 July but watch this space! Expressions of interest welcome from SUBW or Subwoir members. | Bruce Stafford Phone: |
| 448 | 17-18th July 2010 | Barrington Tops walk. Medium. Walking from near Gloucester Tops entrance to Carey's Peak (alt: 1560m)and return (15km each way). Need tent, GOOD sleeping bag, woollen socks, and raincover of some sort (it's not called a sub-tropical rainforest for nothing!). Need warm clothing generally. Snow is a distinct possibility. Meet at Woy Woy Station around 7.30pm friday night and drive to first camp within the park boundary. Note: numbers limited to 8 as it is a World Heritage area. | Bruce Stafford Phone: |
| 449 | Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 July 2010 | Donkey Mountain on 24 / 25 July Donkey Mountain is in the Wolgan Valley about 2.5 hours west of Sydney, is easy climb suitable people new to overnight bushwalking but will involve some rock scrambling. Saturday :- Meet Lithgow 11am - head into Wolgan Valley - leave cars, climb mountain - explore top - find & set up camp - campfire cooking / drinking. Sunday explore rest of top, head back into Valley - afternoon could explore explore ruins at Newens or start heading back. | 450 | Saturday 7 August 2010 | The plan is to do a couple classic multi-pitch abseiling trips near Katoomba this Saturday: Malaita Point followed by Malaita Wall. All up they involve about a dozen abseils up to 45m in length down a pretty impressive section of cliff line. This trip requires confidence / experience on long, dry-rope abseils, being comfortable with heights / exposure, and may require some rock scrambling (I say might because it is my first time down these two). Numbers are very much limited as lots of abseils can make for a very slow trip with a big group. If you are interested please let me know asap. Also let me know what abseiling experience you have. We will have ropes, but you'll need your own gear. I have space to drive people up if transport is an issue. | Tim Vollmer Phone: 0404 273 313 |
| 451 | Sat 14 / Sun 15 August 2010 | Beginner overnight bushwalk to Splendour Rock We will be heading out from Green Gully in the Megalong Valley, so while it is about 17kms each day there will only be one serious ascent and descent. Splendour Rock is one of the most spectacular spots in the mountains, with 270 degree views over the Wild Dog Mountains, Coxs River, Kanangra, Kowmung, Blue Breaks and Kedumba Walls. It is the kind of spot that inspires you to plan trip to explore a whole raft of other areas. Despite having been there four or five times I never get sick of it. The trip will be mostly on firetrail and track, although rather than go there and back on the same route we will take the slightly scrubbier high route on the way there (which gives great views) and come back via the low route through attractive forest. What will you need: basic fitness, good walking shoes, water for a day and a bit (between 3 and 5 litres recommended as we wont be able to refill until mid-morning on Sunday), tent / fly (we will share to keep weight down), sleeping bag, food and the essentials: wine / port / booze of choice and chocolate. Numbers: there are a number of good camp sites up on Mt Dingo so we can handle a decent size group. Transport: I will organise car pooling where people are driving, but I can also take people from Penrith station on Sat morning. Experience needed: You don't need any experience. This is a classic beginners trip. As long as you have basic fitness and are comfortable carrying a full pack you should be fine. Signing up: if you want to come simply send me an email with your name, phone number, what suburb you are coming from, if you are driving or need transport. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to give me a call or email and I will do my best to help out. | Tim Vollmer Phone: 0404 273 313 |
| 452 | Sunday 12 September 2010 | Day Walk - Manly to The Spit Said to be one of the finest urban walks in the world, this is an easy 3-4 hour 10 km walk starting in Manly, and ending at The Spit Bridge. It goes past some lovely harbour beaches, across windswept heath, rainforest and woodland, and past some seriously expensive houses. There are also a number of aboriginal sites along the way as well. All in all a really nice walk. After we get to The Spit, there is the option of catching a bus back to the City, or we can rock hop around to Balmoral.

| 453 | Saturday 25 / Sunday 26 September | Beginners canyoning weekend This weekend will be the perfect introduction to canyoning, even if you have never even abseiled before. T1 and Joshua have generously agreed to help run it. Numbers of beginners will be strictly limited and they will be tied to the number of leaders and what we view as a manageable size. Please do not tell me you are coming unless you are 100% locked in, as pulling out at the last minute on these kind of trips is severely frowned upon (and may impact on your ability to get a place on future trips). The (rough) plan: We will be driving out on the Saturday morning to a camp site on the Wolgan Plateau. We will be operating out of base camp next to the cars, so feel free to bring plenty of luxuries (by this I mean booze, food, cuban cigars etc. I don't mean iPod's, radios or portable TV's!!!). On Saturday we will do some abseiling practice on some cliffs nearby. You will have plenty of time to do a number of drops to ensure you are comfortable with abseiling before we enter any canyons. We will also do a nearby canyon that is a walk through (no abseiling required). On Sunday we will travel down a very popular and relatively easy canyon nearby. It involves a number of small abseils to get your confidence up, finishing with a stunning 25m abseil into a particularly beautiful canyon section. If we finish this canyon with enough time we will do a short side trip down another nearby canyon which is not very long, but it is incredibly narrow. All three are 'dry canyons', although in one you will need to wade through water that is usually about knee deep in places. If you fall you can get wetter! Gear: I will provide ropes. Financial members of SUBW will have access to harnesses and descenders belonging to the club. Being a financial member also means you are covered by the club's insurance policy. What you will need: Overnight camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping mat, warm clothes, head torch, water, food etc). A tent if you have one, but I will bring a couple so there will be plenty of space. Shoes with good grip (canyoners generally wear Volleys. They cost $20, have great grip on wet rock, and you don't feel bad about wrecking them). Some money for a beer / feed at a pub on the way home and to flick your driver some petrol money if you are getting a lift. If you want to attend please send me an email with the following information: * name * mobile phone number * suburb you are traveling from * a little info about your level of experience * whether you have your own abseiling gear or will need club gear If you aren't sure about what canyoning involves, please have a read of: http://fatcanyoners.org/canyoning/ . Feel free to call or email me if you have any further questions. | Tim Vollmer Phone: 0404 273 313 |
| 454 | Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 September 2010 | Wollemi Creek / Colo River Overnight bushwalk - Culoul Range, Hollow Rock, Crawfords Lookout, Wollemi Creek, Colo River, Exit via Boorai Ridge. Suitable for experienced bushwalkers, will involve some rock hopping & steep section in & out of river, camp on one of the most scenic sections of the Colo River. See attached link to photos.
